History

ESL One has taken its prestigious event around the world, gracing even Malaysia and The Philippines – countries not usually known for being hotspots of esports – and handing out millions of dollars in prize funds to victorious teams.

Since 2014, several tournaments take place each year. Chinese team Invictus Gaming won the first ever ESL One in Frankfurt, besting Evil Geniuses in the final. They’re yet to win a second – only Team Secret and Virtus.pro have won multiple ESL One trophies, with three apiece. ESL One tournaments are not always part of the Major circuit in Dota 2. 2017’s ESL One Hamburg and 2018’s ESL One Birmingham were part of Valve-certified Major circuit, adding more prestige to an already distinguished event.

ESL One Birmingham Format

Group Stage

The 12 teams are split into two groups, and each team plays each other in a best of two. The top four in each group move onto the Playoffs and subsequently, onto the stage in front of the crowd. The bottom two in each group are eliminated.

Playoffs

The top four from each group go into a double elimination system, where every game bar the Grand Final is a best-of-three series. This is where the teams are really tested – best of threes will test your strategy, stamina and skill against the best teams in the world. Seven best of three matches culminate with the final, where the winner is crowned after a gruelling five-game series.
