The Overwatch League Playoffs started on Thursday as both Groups began their games to determine who would get the chance to compete for a World Title in the Grand Finals.
Already, we’ve been given some close matches and some dominant ones as well. The Playoffs action continues live from Toronto on YouTube, and you won’t want to miss any of the action.
The Hangzhou Spark and Boston Uprising will go head to head in the Group 1 Winner’s match in what should be a fun matchup. Hangzhou Spark toppled the Atlanta Reign in an absolutely thrilling 3-2 reverse sweep after Atlanta took the opening two maps.
The match was touted as the best team from the East taking on the best team from the West, and the match absolutely delivered. The Spark’s spirits will definitely be high going into this match with the Boston Uprising, who are coming off a 3-1 win over the London Spitfire.
Boston took down London with relative ease, which many fans expected. This next match will definitely be a step up in competition for the Uprising, who will definitely deserve the spot in the Overwatch League Grand Finals if they manage to pull off this upset.
The London Spitfire have their backs against the wall as they take on the Atlanta Reign in the Group 1 Elimination Match. London was already viewed as one of the weakest teams in the tournament, and they now are matched up against an Atlanta team that many think is one of the strongest teams in the Playoffs.
Not only is Atlanta a really strong team, but they’re also entering this match after an embarrassing loss to the Hangzhou Spark in which they couldn’t secure the match point after finding a 2-0 lead. Will Atlanta fold after such a disappointing loss, or will they enter this match with extra motivation to dominate their opponent? London fans may fear they don’t want to find out.
The Winner’s match from Group 2 features two of the top teams from each region in the Dallas Fuel taking on the Florida Mayhem, both of whom won their opening matches in dominant fashion. Dallas enters off the only 3-0 in the opening round of playoffs, taking down a familiar opponent in the Seoul Infernal.
Dallas looks to continue their path to the Grand Finals as they continue to search for their first 1st place finish of the year. Florida meanwhile found a dominant 3-1 win over the Houston Outlaws, going on a 3-0 run after dropping the first map. Florida looks to continue what has been a fairly dominant year for them.
Unfortunately, the Seoul Infernal and Houston Outlaws both find themselves on the verge of going home early on in the tournament as they meet in the Group 2 Elimination match.
Neither team did particularly well in their opening matches, with only one map being won between the two of them. Dallas easily ran through Seoul, and though Houston was able to put up somewhat of a fight, Florida made easy work of the Outlaws.
Both teams are going to need to have much better performances if they want to keep their tournament hopes alive past groups. Expect a much more competitive match from these two teams as they put it all on the line.
