2023 saw the end of the Overwatch League, and there was some confusion about what would happen with this league moving forward. Esports fans now have an answer as to what is to come from Overwatch as Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the Overwatch Championship Series is making a return.

What really hurt Overwatch was that Blizzard Entertainment failed to make this a worldwide event, but that is going to be the focus this year. In the announcement of the league, Blizzard Entertainment announced that this would be an international competition with the top players from throughout the world competing.

Overwatch definitely got passed up by a number of other games, and it will be interesting to see if this league ends up bringing the game back. North American players will continue to lead the play of the game, but there are different regions set up throughout the world.

Different Regions; Different Competitions

Here is a look at the different regions that are going to host competitions as part of the newly formed league:

  • Europe
  • Japan
  • Middle East
  • North Africa
  • North America
  • Pacific
  • South Korea

All of the different regions are going to have Open Qualifiers, and that will be an important part of this league. Players will be forming teams in order to compete in the qualifiers, and the winners will get a spot in the Main Event.

Overwatch wants to encourage international competition and there are going to be two major live events. Blizzard Entertainment is wanting to create a massive event as the winners from each region will battle it out for the ultimate prize.

It’s unclear if players are going to be willing to travel around the world in order to compete in these competitions, but the prizes are going to be worth it. These open qualifiers should keep things interesting to begin the league, but the Main Event is going to have to be a major hit.

Blizzard Entertainment Making Moves

This announcement from Blizzard Entertainment wasn’t the only big news of the way as that company is looking to become a bigger name in this industry. Blizzard Entertainment was able to partner with DreamHack, and that will allow the company to offer more live competitions.

DreamHack will not only help put on the big tournament in the middle of the season, but it will be in charge of putting on the Finals as well. The OWCS is going to be the first major international tournament put on by these two companies, and there is still time to get things ready to go.

Dreamhack Dallas is going to be the site of this first finals event, and it will begin at the end of May. Blizzard Entertainment is going to go over to Europe for the final event as a way to reward those players from other countries.

Not only will Blizzard Entertainment be looking to attract live Overwatch players, but they also have plans to make this a global event. The top matches are going to be streamed, and that could lead to a new wave of players coming to this game.

Time to Bounce Back

Even though the 2023 Overwatch Season was a complete disaster, it’s not too late for this game to make a big comeback. Blizzard Entertainment has a lot invested in Overwatch, and it appears that they are willing to do what it takes to make it successful.

Look for the first qualifiers to kick off in March, and then the action is going to heat up even more from that point. A majority of the action is going to take place online, but the live events will be huge opportunities for Blizzard Entertainment to get this game back on track.
