The first week of Playoff action has finally arrived, and already, the dreams of becoming Overwatch League Champions have been ended for two squads.
The Seoul Infernal and the Atlanta Reign were eliminated on Friday after losing their first two matches in the Group Stage. Two more teams are going to join them on Saturday when the final Group Matches are played to determine the Grand Finals Bracket.
You won’t want to miss it as the remaining teams fight it out for the $1M prize, and you can catch all of the high-stakes action live on YouTube.
The 2023 Overwatch League Playoffs didn’t pan out the way either the Atlanta Reign or Seoul Infernal hoped or expected. The Seoul Infernal bore the mantle of being the worst team at the tournament after an embarrassing Group Stage performance that saw them unable to win a single map while at the tournament.
Their opening match was a 0-3 outing against the Dallas Fuel, who decimated the Infernal, followed up by an 0-3 defeat to the Houston Outlaws in the Group 2 Elimination Match. Though the match with Houston was closer, they were still unable to close out a map win.
The Atlanta Reign entered the Playoffs as the top team from the West coming out of the Summer Stage Qualifiers. After securing a 14-2 record and sitting at the top of the Western Standings, there were plenty of high expectations placed on this squad. Unluckily for them, their first match in the Playoffs would be against the top team from the East in the Hangzhou Spark.
Atlanta was able to jump to a 2-0 lead over the Spark early in the match but would be unable to seal the win on any of the following three maps, resulting in a massive comeback win for the Spark. Atlanta then went up against a London squad that very few had any faith in. London would destroy Atlanta 3-0, sending the top team from the West home without a single match win.
The battle for Texas takes on the biggest stakes it ever has had as the two teams meet in the Group 2 Decider Match. Both teams find themselves in the match after falling to the Florida Mayhem in convincing fashion.
With the winner advancing to the Grand Finals and the loser heading home, both teams are going to leave everything they have on the stage. Dallas’ last match was a 0-3 whooping to the hands of the Mayhem in the Winners’ Match, while Houston just delivered a whooping to Seoul. This is going to be a must-watch match as the two Overwatch teams from Texas battle it out.
The Group 1 Decider match is between the Boston Uprising and the London Spitfire. Both of these teams have spent their entire years trying to break into that top tier of teams that are competing for the World Title.
They now find themselves 3 wins away from being Overwatch League Champions, with their first test being each other.
Boston has been floating around the top teams but hasn’t been able to get past 4th place, while London came in and has surpassed the expectations of fans around the world. Who will advance, and who will be sent home? Saturday will bring the answer.
