Western OWL Teams Start Lower Bracket at Play-Ins

The battle rages on for six of the western teams in the Overwatch League as they continue to fight for one of the last two spots in the Playoffs and, with it, the chance to be crowned Overwatch League World Champions.

The San Francisco Shock, Vancouver Titans, Washington Justice, London Spitfire, Boston Uprising, and Toronto Defiant all look to leave it all on servers in what will be the final matches for most of them.

You won’t want to miss any of the Overwatch League action this week, as two teams will be eliminated on Saturday. You can catch all of the matches on YouTube.

San Francisco Shock vs. Vancouver Titans

  • When: Saturday, September 16th – 3 PM ET
  • Odds: San Francisco Shock (-125) vs. Vancouver Titans (-105)

The weekend will kick off with what oddsmakers have as the closest match of the day, which will be between the San Francisco Shock and the Vancouver Titans.

These teams truly are evenly matched. Both ended the Summer Stage Qualifiers with 8-8 records, which put them in a three-way tie with Toronto for 5th in the West, though Vancouver would snag 5th and San Francisco would have to settle for 7th due to tiebreakers.

Last week, both the Shock and the Titans found themselves on the losing side of their first matches of Play-Ins. The Shock would get off to a quick 1-0 start against the London Spitfire before London won three straight, securing the match 3-1. Vancouver had Toronto on match point by Game 3.

Unfortunately, they let the match slip through their fingers, allowing the 3-2 reverse sweep in favor of Toronto. Now in the Lower Bracket, these two teams look to keep their 2023 Overwatch League seasons alive.

Washington Justice vs. London Spitfire

  • When: Saturday, September 16th – 4:30 PM ET
  • Odds: Washington Justice (+140) vs. London Spitfire (-185)

The Washington Justice had a rough season. They ended the Summer Stage Qualifiers with a 6-10 record, and tiebreakers over the Los Angeles Gladiators gave Washington the final spot in the Play-In tournament.

They made the most of the opportunity, taking down the New York Excelsior in the opening match of the Western Play-Ins to qualify for the double-elimination section of the tournament. Though they lost to Toronto in a clean 3-0 sweep, they hope to make a magical run through the Lower Bracket, starting with their match with the London Spitfire.

The London Spitfire was able to take down the San Francisco Shock in the Upper Bracket Quarterfinals but fell to the Boston Uprising in a 3-1 thrashing in the Upper Bracket Semifinals.

They now face their easiest opponent of the tournament yet in the Washington Justice, who they hope to make quick work of in the Lower Bracket Quarterfinal.

Boston Uprising vs. Toronto Defiant

  • When: Saturday, September 16th – 6 PM ET
  • Odds: Boston Uprising (-220) vs. Toronto Defiant (+165)

In the Upper Bracket, the Boston Uprising and Toronto Defiant prepare to clash in the Finals, with the winner securing one of the two spots in the Playoffs.

Boston had a really good Summer Qualifier, ending with an 11-5 record and securing the top seed going into the Play-In tournament. Their first match in Play-Ins was in the Semifinals against London, where they won easily 3-1. Toronto ended with an 8-8 record and had to play in the quarterfinals.

They were able to absolutely destroy the Washington Justice before mounting an amazing comeback against the Vancouver Titans in the Semifinals. The loser will still have a shot to qualify for the Overwatch League Playoffs, as they will be seeded into the Lower Bracket Final.
