Smooth Sailing to the Title

The General RNG entered the NA Spring Major as the esports betting favorites to hoist the title, and they didn’t disappoint. Although they slipped early into the group stage, NRG did not need long to find serious traction.

NRG opened the tournament with an upset 1-3 loss to FaZe Clan in the first match of Group B. It marked NRG’s first loss to FaZe, having won both of the last two meetings with 4-2 and 3-0.

That defeat was a wake-up call for NRG, who turned on their jets and won all of the remaining three bouts with relative ease. They took down Version 1 (3-2), Spacestation Gaming (3-0), and ended the group stage with a 3-1 victory over G2 Esports.

With a 3-1 record and a 10-6 goal differential, NRG ended the group stage in second place, behind G2, due to a better goal difference (10-3). NRG’s placement earned them a direct bye into the quarter-finals, where Garrett “GarrettG” Gordon and co. met with Team Envy.

Team Envy entered the RLCS NA Spring Major as the second favorites (+300), implying this would be a close bout. It, however, proved to be anything but that.

NRG Demolished Team Envy 4-0, improving their head-to-head record to 16-10. After another commanding win, it was clear that NRG meant business, and they proved that in style.

NRG took down Rogue with 4-2 in the semi-finals and secured a rematch with G2 in the grand finals. G2 failed to improve upon their first meeting with NRG and ended up suffering another devastating (2-4) loss.

There’s No Stopping NRG

The NA Spring Major marked NRG’s third tournament win of the year and their first since winning the RLCS Season X – Winter: NA Major in February. Although only three tournament wins might not sound too good, NRG finished outside of the top four in only two out of 10 tournaments they participated in this year.

Their record of 2021 includes top-four at RLCS Season X – Winter: The Grid NA – Week 4, RLCS Season X – Spring: NA Regional Event 2, and the RLCS Season X – Spring: The Grid NA. Adding to that, NRG finished runners-up at the RLCS X Games: North American Regional – Winter Event 3 and the RLCS Season X – Spring: Lamborghini Open – NA Regional Event 3.

By winning the Rocket League Championship Series NA Spring Major, NRG leapfrogged Rogue, Team Envy, and Spacestation Gaming on the RLCS Season X Spring rankings, solidifying their status as the undisputed best team in the region.

The General NRG now hold 1742 RLCS points on the season. That puts them 311 points clear of Rogue and Team Envy, who share second place with 1431 points.

NRG also lead the RLCS The Grid Rankings for Spring, with a 13-2 record and 42-13 goal differential. That’s good enough to sit them above Spacestation Gaming, who are second with a 13-2 record and 43-21 goal difference.

NRG Leading the way into RLCS X Championships

Although NRG were already guaranteed a spot at the RLCS X Championships, heading to the season-culminating event as the NA’s top seed must feel a little bit sweeter for them.

The RLCS X Championships will run from June 15-20. There will be four regional tournaments that will crown the RLCS X Champions in Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America.

The NA RLCS X Championships will feature the top-six rated teams, including Team Envy, NRG, Spacestation Gaming, Rogue, G2 Esports, and FaZe Clan. As a top-seeded team, NRG received a direct bye to the RLCS X Championships semi-finals.
