Florida Mutineers and Los Angeles Thieves have been eliminated from the Call of Duty League (CDL) Championship 2021. The two CoD esports teams lost their opening bouts on Thursday, August 19, and are now out of the race for the title.
Florida Mutineers No Match for Chicago OpTic
Florida Mutineers began the event in the lower bracket as the lowest-seeded team in the league. By failing to secure an upper bracket seed, the Mutineers have been put in an unenviable spot, where a single loss would result in elimination.
And it didn’t take long before the Mutineers have indeed been eliminated from the CDL title race.
In their opening match of the CDL Championship 2021, Florida Mutineers faced Chicago OpTic. The Green Wall entered the match after suffering a narrow 2-3 loss against New York Subliners.
Regardless of their slip-up in the upper bracket, OpTic Chicago convincingly defeated the Mutineers. In their own fashion, OpTic started the series strong and won Moscow – Hardpoint with 250-102.
Perhaps even more stereotypical of OpTic was the second map of the series. There, Seth “Scump” Abner and co. lost on Search&Destroy (2-6 on Standoff), giving the Mutineers a fighting chance.
However, things soon turned sour for the outsiders.
OpTic shifted into a higher gear and stomped the Mutineers on Checkmate – Control, which they won with 3-1. To that, OpTic added yet another commanding performance on Apocalypse – Hardpoint, winning 250-159, sealing the deal at 3-1.
By losing against Chicago OpTic, Florida Mutineers are out of the race for the CDL Championship title and will have to settle for a seventh-eighth place finish. For their participation, the Mutineers will pocket $25,000 of the $2,500,000 prize pool.
While the Mutineers have had some solid showings this season, they were unable to improve upon their placement in 2020. This is the second consecutive year Florida Mutineers exited the season-culminating tournament in seventh-eighth.
Los Angeles Thieves Unable To Seal The Deal
Like Florida Mutineers, Los Angeles Thieves have exited the CDL Championship 2021 in seventh-eighth. Having finished the regular season in seventh, they were also placed in the lower bracket, where the Thieves met with Minnesota RØKKR.
The RØKKR entered the match after a humiliating 0-3 loss against Dallas Empire in the upper bracket. And while they haven’t impressed anyone with their performance against the Thieves, RØKKR did just enough to win.
The series started with Los Angeles Thieves grabbing an early lead with a 250-213 win on Checkmate – Hardpoint. However, things soon turned sour for the LA team, as they could not match RØKKR on the next two maps.
Minnesota RØKKR found their stride and picked up two back-to-back maps to regain the lead. They won with 6-3 on Standoff – S&D and 3-2 on Raid-Control.
Los Angeles Thieves truck back with a 250-194 win on Garrison – Hardpoint, forcing map five. With everything on the line, the Thieves and RØKKR entered Miami – S&D, where Minnesota proved just how good they are on Search& Destroy.
The teams went back and forth, eventually tieing at 2-2. Despite Austin “SlasheR” Liddicoat’s efforts to keep the Thieves boat afloat, it was Minnesota RØKKR who came out ahead, closing out the series with a comfortable 5-3 victory.
With that loss, Los Angeles Thieves ended their inaugural season in the CDL in a bitter-sweet seventh-eighth place. Like Florida Mutineers, they were awarded $25,000 for their efforts.
The Action Continues on Saturday, Friday 20
The CDL Championship 2021 continues with the second round of play on Friday, August 20. The action will kick off with two winners bracket semi-finals and conclude with round two of the lower bracket.
First up is a clash between Toronto Ultra (-149) and Dallas Empire (+112), followed by a bout featuring Atlanta FaZe (-400) and New York Subliners (+274).
The lower bracket matches will begin at 3:00 p.m.PDT with Chicago OpTic facing the loser of the first upper bracket bout. The final game of the day is scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m. PDT with Minnesota RØKKR facing the loser of the Ultra vs. Empire fixture.
