Hanwha Life Esports fought their way through the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) Regional Finals to qualify for the 2021 LoL World Championship. Hanwha Life Esports are the third and final Korean LoL team to secure a ticket for the tournament.
An underdog Story
Hanwha Life Esports exceeded everyone’s expectations by qualifying for the 2021 LoL World Championship. Having struggled throughout the summer season, Hanwha Life Esports found their stride when it mattered and have emerged as the third Korean representative at the season-culminating event.
Hanwha Life Esports ended the LCK 2021 Summer regular season in eighth place, with a 7-11 record. However, due to their relative success in the LCK 2021 Spring, when they finished third with a 12-6 record, Hanwha Life Esports secured a spot in the LCK Regional Finals as one final chance to qualify for the 2021 LoL World Championship.
In the opening round of the LCK Regional Finals, Hanwha Life Esports met with Liiv SANDBOX. The latter finished the summer season in fifth place, only one win short of the champions, DWG KIA.
Even though many expected Liiv SANDBOX to secure an easy win, Hanwha Life Esports had other plans. They stepped and defeated SANDBOX with 3-1, showing to the world that they’re not to be underestimated,
Following an impressive win against Liiv SANDBOX, Hawhal Life Esports were set to clash with Nongshim Red Force. Expected to lose, Hanwha Life Esports once again proved the world wrong.
A Dominant Win For The LoL Worlds Ticket
The clash between Nongshim Red Force and Hanwha Life Esports happened on Wednesday, September 1. The match would decide which team will join T1 and DWG KIA at the 2021 LoL World Championship.
All the eyes were on Nogshim Red Force, who were the dominant force throughout the summer split and ended the regular season in third. Billed as one of Korea’s strongest LoL esports teams, RedForce were supposed to sweep Hanwha Life and book the LoL Worlds ticket for themselves. But things didn’t play out as expected.
Hanwha Life Esports had a slow start to the series but accelerated in the mid-late to grab a 1-0 lead. And while the first game of the series looked close, the succeeding two were anything but.
Hanwha Life used the momentum and completely outclassed RedForce in games two and three to produce a 3-0 sweep and one of the biggest upsets of the year. Nongshim RedForce, while a force to be reckoned with throughout the summer split, completely fell apart in the postseason.
They showed little to no proactivity in the last-chance series, falling short of expectations. Although Nongshim RedForce will miss out on the 2021 LoL World Championship, the organization can be proud of what its team has achieved.
As a team that ended LCK 2021 Spring in sixth place with a 7-11 record, RedForce showed immense growth in the summer and put their name on the map. Although a bittersweet finish to the year, RedForce can feel confident heading into the 2022 season.
The Battle Isn’t Finished
While Hanwha Life Esports locked their spot at the 2021 LoL World Championship, their battle is far from over. They still need to face the winningest LoL esports team, T1, who they will meet in the LCK Regional Finals on Thursday, September 2.
The teams will duke it out for a spot at the LoL Worlds main event, while the loser of the match will get seeded into the Play-ins. T1 and Hanwha Life Esports last met in the final round of the regular season, when the latter won 2-0.
