Los Angeles Guerrillas Part Ways With Huke

Call of Duty League franchise Los Angeles Guerrillas announced its first roster change of the 2023 CDL season. As revealed, the team parted ways with former world champion Cuyler “Huke” Garland, who enters free agency where he’ll look for a new team to compete for in 2023.

Huke and Los Angeles Guerrillas have mutually parted ways on Tuesday, January 3, ending the 23-year-old’s 15-month stint with the team. Huke joined LA Guerrillas in September 2021 from Los Angeles Thieves, where he has spent just four months, from May to September 2021.

However, even though Huke struggled to find a home, jumping between LA Thieves and Dallas Empire – with who he won the 2020 CDL Championship – he found his place at the Guerrillas. Yet, unfortunately, he struggled to achieve the same level of success as in previous years.

Huke kicked off his campaign with LA Guerrillas with a ninth-12th place finish at Call of Duty League 2022 – Kickoff Classic, adding another disappointing ninth-12th place finish in Major 1. Things didn’t look to improve in the Major 2 qualifiers, where the Guerrillas finished sixth, but the team then found traction and claimed the CDL Major 2 trophy.

Despite their success, Los Angeles Guerrillas soon returned to their old ways and haven’t added another tournament title. The team finished the year with a seventh-eighth place finish at CDL Major 4 and missed out on CDL Championship.

For the next season, LA Guerrillas made some changes to its lineup but kept ahold of Huke for the opening tournament of the year. However, after an eighth-place finish at CDL Major 1 qualifier and ninth-12th in CDL Major 1 2023, the Guerrillas decided to make further changes to its lineup, hoping to find a bit more traction ahead of the second CDL Major.

Besides parting ways with Huke, Los Angeles Guerrillas also announced the benching of Travis “Neptune” McCloud and Kris “Spart” Cervantez, who got moved to the substitute position. To fill in the gaps, the Guerrillas added Adam “Assault” Garcia, Kaden “Exceed” Stockdale, and JoeDeceives, who were promoted to the main CDL lineup.

All three players join Los Angeles Guerrillas CDL division from Los Angeles Guerrillas Academy, which has achieved a lot so far this season. The LAG Academy squad kicked off the year with two top-eight finishes atr CODAgent and CheckMate Gaming Elite but then added two silver medals from CheckMate Gaming and GameBattles events.

In November, LAG Academy produced another superb showing and won back-to-back events in Breaking Point Next North America 2023 and CDC North America 2023 Cup #1, before making it through CDC North America 2023 Major 1 Qualifier. In the second CDC NA Cup, LAG placed third but stepped up when it mattered and won CDC Raleigh Open 2023.

The academy team tied the main roster’s run at the CDL Major 1 2023, where they placed ninth-12th with wins against D1 Gaming LA, ROKKR Academy, London Royal Ravens, and a very strong showing against Atlanta FaZe, who they forced to five maps (2-3) in the group stage.

Given the team’s success, it makes sense for the Guerrillas to promote academy players to the main lineup, which will now consist of three ex-LA Guerrillas Academy players and two-time CoD world champion Alec “Arcitys” Sanderson.

Los Angeles Guerrillas will debut its new-look lineup on Saturday, January 14, in the first week of Call of Duty League Major 2 qualifiers, when they’ll clash with Florida Mutineers. After that, the Guerrillas will meet with LA Thieves and Minnesota ROKKR and end the qualifiers with tough games against Atlanta FaZe and Toronto Ultra.

But even though the Guerrillas have a rough schedule ahead of them, the new-look squad looks have shown immense potential, and if things fall into place, the Guerrillas will likely bounce back from their slump.
