Week 3 of the Call of Duty League Major 2 qualifiers has come to a close, and with its conclusion comes the conclusion of the qualifiers as well. The bracket is officially set, and teams and fans alike wait for February 2nd, when the Major will take place at MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston, MA.
OpTic Texas finished the qualifiers at the top of the standings with a 4-1 record. Their path to the top wasn’t the cleanest going into the major, with a map win rate of only 57%, ending qualifiers with a 13-10 map record. However, due to them being in close matches, we got to see a lot of this team, and they’ve proven to overcome adversity, even beating the only other 4-1 team, the Toronto Ultra, in a dominant 3-1 match. OpTic’s only stumble came last week against Las Vegas and proved the team to be beatable.
The Toronto Ultra struggled against OpTic Texas in Week 2. However, they’ve looked absolutely dominant in every other match, only dropping two maps to teams not named OpTic. This is in part because, due to no fault of their own, they haven’t played great opposition. All their wins come over teams in the bottom half of the standings. It’ll be interesting to see if Toronto will continue its success against the top teams at the Major or if their match against OpTic Texas was just a preview of things to come.
The Boston Breach put up a respectable 3-2 record. They beat the Legion, Mutineers, and Rokkr all pretty handily. Even in their losses to the Thieves and OpTic, they still showed fight, taking both series to all five maps. Expect the Breach to be energized and able to defend their home soil.
Many wondered what the New York Subliners would look like coming off of their success at the last tournament. They lost to Atlanta FaZe 3-2, which isn’t a bad loss, as FaZe has proven to be a solid team. However, the loss to the Surge in what would be Seattle’s only match win of qualifiers is a little worrisome for New York fans. While New York was able to find three match wins, they were all over teams they should beat. I expect the Subliners to have a hard time in Boston.
