Florida Mutineers and Seattle Surge caused massive upsets in the first round of Call of Duty League (CDL) Major 21. The Mutineers took down London Royal Ravens, whereas Seattle Surge swept OpTic Texas.
In the opening match of the CDL Major 2 on Thursday, March 31, Florida Mutineers stunned London Royal Ravens with a dominant 3-0 sweep. This sees the Mutineers advance into the next stage, while London Royal Ravens drop down into the lower bracket, where they’ll compete for survival.
The teams entered the match on opposite levels of momentum. Florida, who had a solid start to the qualifiers and won their opening two games, lost the next three and struggled to find any traction.
London Royal Ravens, on the other side, entered CDL Major 2, winning four of their last five outings. Even more impressive is that they’ve lost only against the defending CDL champions, FaZe Clan.
But even though London Royal Ravens looked better on paper, once the match started, Florida Mutineers were in complete control.
Owakening and Davpadie were the standout performers of the Mutineers, with a phenomenal performance on Gavutu-Hardpoint. The duo locked in 1.33 and 1.40 KD, respectively, leading the Mutineers to a 250-177 win.
On Tuscan S&D, the Ravens responded with a strong start, going 4-0 up, but they couldn’t close it out. They lost the momentum and choked their lead, giving Florida Mutineers their second series point with 6-4.
Following the demoralizing performance on map two, London Royal Ravens looked lost, and they struggled to deliver on Gavutu-Control.
They fought hard, and it did seem like Ravens could score their first point, but things did not go as planned as they ended up losing the map and the series 0-3.
This defeat was one of the toughest ones for the London squad, who were long viewed as one of the top CDL teams. Although they’ve yet to permanently lose that status, they have a lot of catching up to do in the lower bracket.
Even though Florida Mutineers scored an incredible upset win, even their success can’t be compared to that of the Seattle Surge. The latter swept the defending CDL major champions 3-0 and produced what can easily be described as one of the most shocking results of the 2022 CDL season.
At the start of the CDL season, the Surge were viewed as one of the top teams in the league. They defeated Atlanta FaZe in the Kickoff Classic and made it all the way to the finals, where they lost to Toronto Ultra.
Even early into the CDL season, Surge looked solid, winning their opening two matches. But things quickly turned sour for the Seattle outfit, who would lose their next five matches.
However, despite their shaky performance so far this season, Seattle Surge made quite a statement in the opening round of CDL Major 2, where they swept OpTic Texas, ending OpTic’s 12-game winning streak with their second win across the last nine outings.
By stunning London Royal Ravens, Florida Mutineer secured a spot in the second round of CDL Major 2 on Saturday, April 2. Their upper bracket quarter-final opponents are Boston breach, who defeated Los Angeles Guerrillas 3-0.
Seattle Surge got paired with Atlanta FaZe, who they’ll meet a couple of hours before the Mutineers vs Breach clash. It will mark their second meeting with FaZe and their first since March 13, when Surge won 3-2.
Meanwhile, London Royal Ravens and OpTic Texas now need to fight their way through the lower bracket, with the Ravens slated to meet with Paris Legion and OpTic set to clash with Minnesota RØKKR. Both fixtures are scheduled for Friday, April 1.
