Palafox Leads NRG to Upset Over Team Liquid

The opening round of the LCS playoffs wrapped up Friday night, with NRG taking down Team Liquid Honda in a dominant fashion.

The Summer Split has been nothing if not dramatic, and so an upset to close out the first round seems rather fitting. All teams participating in the postseason are playing next week, as the next four matches in the LCS playoffs are now officially set.

The matchups are sure to bring some exciting League of Legends action as the top eight teams in the LCS continue to battle it out for the four coveted spots at the League of Legends World Championships later this year.

Dignitas vs. TSM

  • When: Thursday, August 3rd

The first match of the next round is going to see Dignitas take on TSM. Dignitas was automatically seeded into the lower bracket after ending the regular season in 7th place after beating 100 Thieves in the tiebreaker.

TSM just suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 match to Evil Geniuses LG in the Upper Bracket. It’ll be interesting to see how each team’s last outing will affect their mindsets coming into this one.

TSM is going to have to shake off the traumatizing Game 5 in the Evil Geniuses LG match and come into the match with a calm mind to avoid an early exit from the playoffs.

100 Thieves vs. Team Liquid Honda

  • When: Friday, August 4th

100 Thieves suffered an absolutely devastating season-ending 7-11 and lost to Dignitas for the 7th place tiebreaker. As the 8th seed, they barely squeaked into the Playoffs, and with no one believing that they could compete with the top teams, they are playing with house money.

They look to pounce on a Team Liquid Honda team that is coming off a tough 3-1 loss to NRG in the Upper Bracket. Team Liquid will have to shake off the upset and not let it affect them if they want to make a Lower Bracket run.

Evil Geniuses LG vs. Cloud9

  • When: Saturday, August 5th

Evil Geniuses LG entered their first-round match against TSM as a -500 betting favorite.

Though they were able to pull out the win, it was a rather messy match. TSM forced Evil Geniuses to play all five games, and though Game 5 was a total stomp Evil Geniuses LG is going to have to clean up their game if they want to take down the best League of Legends team in North America.

Cloud9 sat at the top of the Standings all season, ending the regular season with a 13-5 record and a win against Golden Guardians in the 1st place tiebreaker.

Cloud9 looks to extend their 2023 LCS dominance starting with Evil Geniuses LG as they keep their eyes on Worlds.

NRG vs. Golden Guardians

  • When: Sunday, August 6th

Few fans, experts, or oddsmakers saw NRG winning their match against Team Liquid Honda. No one saw them doing it in such a dominant fashion. The team that ended 9-9 in the regular season looked unstoppable Friday as Palafox dominated the mid-lane against the rookie APA.

They’ll need another strong performance if they want to compete with the Golden Guardians, who just finished the regular season 13-5.

Though they lost the tiebreaker for 1st place to Cloud9, this squad is undeterred and truly believes they can make a run in the LCS playoffs and hopefully in Korea at Worlds later this year.
