The first three rounds of the League of Legends World Championship Swiss Stages went by reasonably quickly, and after the dust settled, Team Liquid and Team BDS found themselves with one-way tickets back home after disappointing 0-3 runs.
Six teams now face the same fate in the 4th round of the Swiss Stage as the 1-2 teams battle it out amongst themselves in a best-of-threes in which the losers will be eliminated from the competition.
With their 2023 seasons on the line, you can expect every saved strategy to be used in a last-ditch effort to stay in the hunt for the Summoner’s Cup.
The 4th round of the Swiss Stage kicks off with a battle for the West as the LCS’s Cloud9 and LEC’s Fnatic go head-to-head in a win-or-go-home situation. Both teams are fan favorites who have deep roots in the League of Legends competitive scene.
Cloud9 started their tournament off well with a win over MAD Lions before losing to LNG and T1. Fnatic has had two losses to tough LPL opponents in LNG and Bilibili Gaming but won the game they were expected to against GAM.
This, on paper, seems to be a fairly even match, and the oddsmakers agree. This game should set an excellent tone for the next round of play.
MAD Lions enters this next round, having completely disappointed LEC fans so far this tournament by losing to two North American teams in Cloud9 and NRG and finding their only win against the worst team in the Swiss Stage and fellow LEC member Team BDS. WeiboGaming FAW AUDI started the Swiss Stage off right with a win over NRG but fell to G2 Esports and kt Rolster.
The level of opposition has been higher, and at the end of the day, being in the competitive LPL environment gives a team a natural edge, leading to a lopsided betting line. MAD Lions will have to play at a level that they haven’t played at in months if they even want to compete against WeiboGaming in this best-of-three series.
No analyst, fan, or oddsmaker is giving the GAM Esports any chance against Dplus KIA this week, as the VCS hero will try to take down a giant from the LCK. Dplus KIA fell to G2 Esports in the opening round of the Swiss Stage before falling to kt Rolster. They then found a clean 2-0 win over Team BDS, and they are currently attempting to turn their tournament run around.
GAM Esports made it to the Swiss Stage via the Play-In tournament, where they had their backs against the wall.
The fact that they were able to keep their composure after losing to Gen.G Esports and Fnatic to beat Team Liquid 2-1 tells you a lot about this team and their belief in themselves. They’ll attempt to prove the doubters wrong by sending a former world championship organization home at the hands of a minor region team. Though the odds are against them, crazier things have happened at Worlds.
