VCS Teams Fighting for Last Spot at Worlds 2023

The VCS Dusk Season has been an incredibly close one, proving to the world once again that the VCS is capable of producing high-level competitive League of Legends teams.

After a grueling 14-match season and three rounds of Playoffs, we are down to four teams competing not only for the VCS Dusk Crown but also the other VCS spot at Worlds 2023 in South Korea later this year. There’s a ton to play for. You won’t want to miss any of the action.

GAM Esports

GAM Esports is the only team from the VCS so far to qualify for Worlds after finding a win against Team Secret in the Upper Bracket Final to earn the first stop in the Grand Final, guaranteeing themselves a top-two finish.

This is a historic team that long-time League of Legends fans will recognize as the team made huge waves on the international scene back in 2017 when they were known by their former name, the GIGABYTE Marines. GAM Esports retains star Jungler Levi, who spent time in the 100 Thieves organization before returning back to his former team.

In the Regular Season portion of the season, GAM Esports had a remarkable run, going 11-3, only dropping matches to Team Whales, CERBERUS Esports, and Team Flash.

Their finish put them first in the standings and gave them the top seed going into the Playoffs. In the Playoffs, they started their run with a match against Saigon Buffalo in the Upper Bracket Semifinals, which they won 3-1 after dropping the first game.

The Upper Bracket Final against Team Secret saw GAM Esports go down 1-2 early. After winning a long, hard-fought 40-minute Game 4, GAM Esports was able to take Game 5 to book their trip to Korea.

Team Secret

Though they are definitely disappointed by the loss in the Upper Bracket Final, there is still plenty of hope that Team Secret will be able to take down the winner of Team Whales and Saigon Buffalo in the Lower Bracket Final to not only book a rematch with GAM Esports in the Grand Final but also a trip to Korea. Team Secret has had an amazing run through the Playoffs after ending the season 8-6 and 5th out of 8 teams.

It looked like their fate was sealed when they went down 0-2 early to CERBERUS Esports in the opening round of the playoffs. However, Team Secret did not fold and was able to pull off an incredible reverse sweep. That gave them plenty of confidence when they took on the 2nd best team in the league, Team Whales.

They swept Team Whales 3-0 in the match leading up to their meeting with GAM Esports. No matter the opponent, this team will give it their all, as they don’t see their miracle season-ending any time soon.

Saigon Buffalo vs. Team Whales

  • When: Saturday, September 2nd – 6 AM
  • Odds: Saigon Buffalo (+140) vs. Team Whales (-185)

Going into the Playoffs, Saigon Buffalo was the 3rd seed, and Team Whales was the 2nd. They are now meeting in the Lower Bracket Semifinal after their Upper Bracket Semifinals didn’t go to plan.

Saigon Buffalo kept their 2023 campaign alive by finding a close 3-2 win over Team Flash in the Lower Bracket Quarterfinals last week, while Team Whales made easy work of their Lower Bracket opponent CEREBUS Esports, who they swept 3-0.

With revenge against Team Secret on their mind, expect a well-coordinated Team Whales to show up on Saturday.
