Details are just starting to form as Riot Games announces the upcoming League of Legends: World Championship cycle. Recently, in January, the publisher announced the champions tournament would be held in China for the second straight year. League of Legends began the new, and exciting season with regional tournaments this March.
Fans and gamers are going to have to be patient. Riot Games has yet to formally announce the tournament schedule. With ever-changing circumstances due to COVID-19, and different regional restrictions, publishers might wait before solidifying tournament dates.
League of Legends fans should be impressed with the turnout for the World Championship 2020. The tournament ended October 31 and rewarded over $2 million in prizes. Tournament organizers were able to adjust the tournament structure due to travel restrictions. In the end, DWG KIA won the tournament and is the favored team in 2021.
With the World Championship traditionally slated for September, fans should expect an innovative approach to the 2021 season. Usually, the tournament features 24 of the best LOL teams from around the world but nothing is set in stone. Riot Games may choose more of a virtual route than to invite qualifying teams from around the world. One thing is for sure, there are more exciting announcements to come.
Leading up to the World Championship players compete in regional tournaments for prize money and championship points. The top teams from the regional tournaments will then compete in the Mid-Season Invitational set to begin May 6. Through the summer, teams will compete in another round of regional tournaments for a guaranteed spot in the 2021 World Championship.
Below are the preliminary odds to win the 2021 World Championship from BetOnline:
DWG KIA (+150): is the sportsbook favorite, and for good reason, DWG was crowned the most recent World Champion in 2020. This Korean outfit has placed as a finalist in the past three World Championship tournaments. They had an impressive 2020 campaign and were basically unbeatable. DWG will look to continue their momentum into the 2021 season.
Top Esports (+700): Another powerhouse League of Legends team based out of China. Top Esports had an impressive 2020 run winning both the Mid-Season Cup and the LPL Summer tournament. However, they fell short in the World Championship losing in the semifinals. Look for Top Esports to take a shot at the gold medal.
FunPlus Phoenix (+900): also known as FPX, will be looking for redemption this 2021 season. FPX was the 2019 World Champion but cobbled together a disappointing 2020 campaign. They will look to bounce back in this year’s season. Sportsbooks might have listed FPX a little high considering their checkered success.
Edward Gaming (+1000): is one of the most successful teams in League of Legends Esports history. They’ve been in competing in premiere LOL events since 2013 and have won the most matches since 2017. However, Edward Gaming has struggled in major tournaments the past couple seasons.
Suning (+1700): though this team isn’t ranked top-5, they did managed to place as the runner-up in the 2020 World Championship. Suning has the resources and talent to be among the top League Of Legends teams. Look for Suning to rise up the ranks and repeat their 2020 success.
