An era that lasted five years with G2 Esports comes to an end as the superstar, Perkovic, has officially left the G2 organization. For weeks, his departure was speculative. However, the recent announcement has confirmed such suspicions. The Croatian has, in five short years, grown to be one of the prominent League of Legend stars, contributing to making the game what it is today.
In a farewell note to the superstar, G2 expressed their appreciation and love for Perkovic as he was instrumental in most of the accolades attributed to G2. The note reads, “As one of the few players to dominate in more than one role, he has shown the world time and time again just how talented he is, being crucial to G2 winning eight EU titles, MSI 2019, and making three consecutive deep runs at Worlds”.
Time and time again, Perkovic has represented everything G2 embodies. Defying the odds, overcoming difficulty, standing tall, win or lose, and always looking to entertain. He is truly a once-in-a-lifetime player and “a true G2 Samurai.”
Perkz’ Time at G2
At the time Perkovic joined the team, they were known as Gamers 2. That was right before the start of the 2015 EUCS Spring Qualifier. He soon after departed for a French team, Millenium. However, his stay there was short as he reunited with Gamers 2 and led them to a third-place finish at the EUCS Summer Playoffs. That was the springboard win for G2 as they have, since then, been a team to be reckoned with in the European region.
Throughout his five-year career with G2, they have won eight EU LCS/LEC titles, two Rift Rivals tournaments, the 2019 Mid-Season Invitational, and three top-four World placings. They ended 2019 with a second-place finish at Worlds 2019. His skill singled him out as he was the public face of the organization. Some would say he was the face of the entire EU region.
His starting position was as a mid-laner but was moved to the bot lane following the integration of Danish mid-laner Rasmus “Caps” Winther to the team. It was in this new role that he recorded all of his success, although it seems like his departure from G2 might have us see him return to the mid-lane position.
What’s Next for Perkovic?
The North American region might stand to benefit the most following this announcement as the EU has lost its arguably biggest star. Rumors have linked the Croatian to Cloud 9 as where he will continue his career. The North American team has recently let go of their mid-laner, Yasin “Nisqy” Dincer, which makes this more likely move for Luka. Perkovic’s teaming up with former teammate Jesper “Zven” Svenningsen, and an up-and-coming superstar in the jungle, Robert “Blaber” Huang, will set up Cloud 9 to be a force to be reckoned with not only at the NA LCS level but on the world stage.
The coming days will shed light on where Perkovic will be looking to continue his career. Him being a member of Cloud 9 is the most likely outcome as there is no other move in sight. Niqsy, whose departure has long been complete, is linked with a move to Fnatic.
G2 fans might have a difficult time wrapping their heads around the fact that Perkovic will sometime soon represent another organization. It is safe to say that at this point, it is not only the fans of the organization that are concerned as the entire EU region might have just lost one of its biggest stars. The move to Cloud 9 will prove deadly as North America will have an opportunity to dominate not just the EU but the world at large.
